I Have a UTI in Portugal — What Should I Do?
In Portugal, UTI antibiotics need a doctor’s prescription — pharmacists cannot give them. For uncomplicated cystitis, a €39 video consultation is usually the fastest way to get treated.
High fever, back or side pain, vomiting or pregnancy? Go to an emergency room or call 112.

Portuguese pharmacies (farmácias) are well trained. They can advise on pain relief and over-the-counter options for mild symptoms.
They cannot prescribe antibiotics. In Portugal a UTI antibiotic always needs a doctor. If symptoms are mild, the pharmacist is still a good first stop for what to do next.
How to see a doctor as a tourist
- SNS (public)
- Built for residents. As a visitor, the realistic public door is the emergency room — slow for a simple UTI, appropriate for red flags.
- Private clinic
- Often fast in cities and tourist areas, but can be expensive without insurance, and you have to travel there.
- Online (Lon Clinic)
- Video with a doctor registered with the Portuguese Medical Association. If indicated, an electronic prescription to any pharmacy in the country. €39. English, Spanish or Portuguese.
Getting antibiotics — SNS vs private vs online
| Option | Speed | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| SNS (public) | Slow for visitors | Often billed without EHIC/GHIC | Emergencies, not a quick UTI |
| Private in-person | Fast | Often high without insurance | Complex or red-flag cases |
| Lon Clinic online | Same-day slots | €39 | Uncomplicated cystitis, no fever |
24-hour pharmacies
Most Portuguese cities have a rotating 24h pharmacy (farmácia de serviço). The list is posted on pharmacy doors, or search “farmácia de serviço” plus your city.

FAQ
Can I buy UTI antibiotics over the counter in Portugal?
No. Antibiotics require a prescription, even for a common UTI. A pharmacist can help with pain relief and next steps, not with an antibiotic on their own.
How much does an online consultation cost?
At Lon Clinic it is €39 for a video consultation. The prescription, if the doctor issues one, is included — no extra prescribing fee at checkout.
Will the prescription work at any pharmacy?
Yes. A Portuguese electronic prescription can be collected at any pharmacy in the country with the code sent by SMS or email.
I am a man with these symptoms. Can I still book online?
UTI in men is not treated as a simple cystitis. Do not use this page as a shortcut to antibiotics. If there is fever or loin pain, go to the ER. Otherwise book a general consultation and expect a more careful work-up, often in person.
