FAQ
What is a travel medicine consultation?
A pre-trip appointment with a doctor who reviews your itinerary, health and vaccine history, and prescribes the vaccines and medicines you need, such as malaria prevention. At Lon Clinic it is done by video in English and costs 39 €.
Where can I get travel vaccines in Portugal?
At an International Vaccination Centre (CVI), a health centre or, for some vaccines bought with a prescription, through a pharmacy. Yellow fever is only given at a CVI. You need a prescription first, which you get in the consultation.
Which vaccines do I need for my trip?
It depends on the country, the season, the length and type of trip, your age, your health and the vaccines you already have. Common examples are hepatitis A, typhoid and yellow fever. The doctor decides with you in the consultation.
Can I get malaria tablets in Portugal?
Yes, with a prescription. If your trip needs malaria prevention, the doctor prescribes it during the consultation and you buy it at any Portuguese pharmacy.
How far ahead of my trip should I book?
Ideally 4 to 8 weeks before you leave, because some vaccines need time to protect you. If you travel in less than 2 weeks, book anyway: there is still a lot we can do, and same-day consultations are often available.
Do I need a Portuguese SNS number (número de utente)?
No. This is a private consultation. Expats, international students and digital nomads living in Portugal can book without SNS registration or a family doctor.
Is the prescription accepted at the CVI?
Yes. It is a Portuguese prescription, valid at every International Vaccination Centre (Centro de Vacinação Internacional) in Portugal and at Portuguese pharmacies.
How much is the yellow fever vaccine?
The yellow fever vaccine costs 20 € at the CVI, paid separately from the consultation. The international certificate is issued at the CVI and becomes valid 10 days after the vaccine.
Do I pay more for several countries?
No. The price is the same for one or several destinations on the same trip, and there is no urgent-booking fee.
Can I book for my whole family?
Yes. A consultation for 2 people costs 69 € and for 4 people 136 €, all in one video call.
I am pregnant or travelling with a baby. Can I do this online?
Yes. Advice is adapted to pregnancy, children and chronic conditions, and we tell you clearly if you need to be seen in person.
Will my health insurance reimburse it?
We send a receipt you can submit to your health or travel insurer. Reimbursement depends on your policy.
I am already abroad and feel unwell. Is this the right consultation?
No. This consultation prepares you before you travel. If you are ill, see a doctor locally. Any fever within 3 months of visiting a malaria area must be checked the same day.
