International Vaccination Centres in Portugal: complete guide by region (2026)
Contacts, hours and real booking experience at every International Vaccination Centre in Portugal. Online travel consultation, €39.

General information — it does not replace a medical consultation. Vaccination centre hours may change.
If you are travelling to a country that requires or recommends specific vaccination — yellow fever, hepatitis A/B, typhoid or Japanese encephalitis — you need an International Vaccination Centre (CVI in Portuguese), the travel-medicine circuit in the SNS (Portugal’s public health service). The centres are organised by Local Health Unit (ULS) on the mainland and on the islands.
Booking that consultation on the SNS can take weeks or months, and some centres do not answer the phone. Lon Clinic is a telemedicine clinic: book the consultation for today or tomorrow, €39. If you leave in a few days, how to find an urgent travel consultation. The prescription you receive is then used to schedule the jab at one of the centres on this list.

Talk to a doctorVaccines: what is exclusive to the CVI
Not every travel vaccine requires a trip to a CVI. In Portugal, several travel-related doses can be given at a pharmacy with a medical prescription. There are exceptions.
| Vaccine | Where it is given | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow fever | International Vaccination Centre only | The only vaccine the International Health Regulations may require for entry. Not available at pharmacies. The CVI issues the ICVP after the dose; the certificate is valid only from the 10th day and, for this vaccine, is valid for life. |
| Typhoid | Injectable: usually at a CVI; oral: may be available at a pharmacy | Depends on the formulation prescribed. |
| Hepatitis A and B | CVI or pharmacy, with a prescription | Not exclusive to the CVI. |
| Japanese encephalitis | CVI or pharmacy, with a prescription | Not exclusive to the CVI. |
| Cholera | CVI or pharmacy, with a prescription | Not exclusive to the CVI. |
| Meningococcal disease | CVI or pharmacy, with a prescription | May be required (e.g. pilgrimage to Mecca). The vaccine is not exclusive to the CVI; the international certificate is issued only there. |
| Rabies (pre-exposure) | Usually at hospital level | Availability varies. Confirm beforehand: it is not always at a CVI or a pharmacy. |
The COVID-19 vaccine and those on the National Vaccination Programme are not given at a CVI — they stay at your usual health centre.
The only vaccine universally required under international health regulations is yellow fever, and it is always at a CVI. For the rest, the travel consultation decides case by case. Destinations: vaccines by country. The vaccine circuit itself: traveller vaccines guide.
This article brings together contacts, hours and, above all, the real experience of reaching each centre — phone and email, tested by the Lon Clinic team between 3 and 7 September 2026.
How the SNS travel consultation works
Before any international vaccine on the SNS, there is a travel consultation (in person or, in some cases, by email with a prescription). The clinician assesses destination, duration and history, and only then is the jab booked.
- Wait for the consultation: from a few days to more than 2–3 months, depending on the region.
- Booking: the vast majority only book by phone or email. Direct online booking is the exception.
- Paper prescription: several centres ask for the paper prescription on the day of the vaccine, even if an electronic prescription already exists.
- English: not all centres answer in English; email is usually the more reliable route.
- Many do not answer at first: it is worth emailing in parallel.

What the practical experience tells us
- The most reliable centres, confirmed as answering on the first call: ULS de Coimbra, ULS Lezíria (Santarém), ULS do Arco Ribeirinho (Lavradio) and the CVI on Corvo island.
- Most common pattern: phone attempts went unanswered at at least a dozen centres — try another time of day, or follow up by email in parallel.
- Several centres have an automated attendant with callback (ULS do Nordeste, ULS Gaia/Espinho, ULS do Litoral Alentejano, CVI Faial). It is normal not to speak to anyone at first. On Faial, the callback did eventually happen.
- Broken or non-existent numbers: ULS São João (Porto), ULS do Alentejo Central (Évora), ULS do Baixo Alentejo (Beja), Hospital dos Marmeleiros (Madeira) and ULS de Matosinhos (call rejected).
- In the Azores, most islands were hard to reach by phone, with the exception of Corvo — and even there the travel-medicine consultation is not guaranteed.
Price of the online consultation: how much a travel-medicine consultation costs. If the flight is this week: travelling without vaccines.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need to go to an International Vaccination Centre, or can I be vaccinated somewhere else?
Yellow fever and the ICVP only at a recognised CVI. Other travel vaccines (hepatitis A/B, oral typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, among others) can, with a prescription, be given at a pharmacy — the consultation decides. Lon Clinic does the assessment and the prescription by video consultation; the international-circuit jab still happens at a CVI when that is the case. CUF does not administer the yellow-fever circuit.
How long does it take to book an SNS travel consultation?
It varies widely: about 1 day’s wait for a vaccine at ULS Lezíria (Santarém), up to more than 2–3 months for a consultation (ULS Gaia/Espinho or the CHP Infectious Diseases outpatient clinic). At Lon Clinic the consultation is usually today or tomorrow; the wait for the vaccine is still that of the CVI.
Is an electronic prescription enough to get the vaccine?
At several centres, no — they ask for the paper prescription on the day of the jab (for example ULS de Coimbra and ULS do Arco Ribeirinho), even if an electronic prescription already exists.
What if I do not speak Portuguese?
English varies. At ULS Santa Maria (Sete Rios), the most reliable route is email, with a reply the same day or the next. The Lon Clinic consultation is also available in English and Spanish.
Why do so many centres not answer the phone?
In this audit’s attempts, some centres use an automated attendant with a callback request, have broken lines, or simply did not answer. Always confirm by email in parallel.
