Need to Renew Your Prescription in Portugal? Here's How
If it is a common, non-controlled medicine you already take at a stable dose, a doctor can often renew it on video — €19 at Lon Clinic. Bring the box or a photo of the old prescription.
This is not a form that prints any drug. Antibiotics, weight-loss medicines, new sleeping pills or opioids are not renewed this way. New or severe symptoms: that is a full consultation or the ER — 112.

In limited cases — mainly chronic medication already on a Portuguese electronic prescription — a pharmacy may dispense a small extra supply without a new script. It is not guaranteed and depends on the drug. Do not count on it as your plan.

SNS24 (808 24 24 24) is Portugal’s national health line. It can help residents, and in some cases EU visitors with an EHIC/GHIC, with public-system questions. Wait times and what they can actually renew vary. It is not built as a fast tourist desk.
An EHIC/GHIC does not pay for a private or Lon Clinic consultation. We can issue a receipt if your travel insurance covers outpatient or telemedicine care.

The doctor decides
If the history is enough and the drug is appropriate to renew, you get a Portuguese electronic prescription by SMS or email, usually at the end of the call. If not, you are told — we do not renew in the dark.

Do not use renewal — go to the ER or a full consult
- Chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, or heavy bleeding — 112
- A severe drug reaction (widespread rash, swelling, collapse)
- You have never taken this medicine before — that is a first prescription, not a renewal
- You want an antibiotic, a sleeping pill, or a weight-loss injection without a full assessment

FAQ
Can I get any medication renewed this way?
Most stable chronic medicines — blood pressure, thyroid, cholesterol, contraception, many inhalers — can be assessed this way. Antibiotics, GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, new psychiatric or sleep medicines, and opioids are not renewed on this pathway.
When do I get the new prescription?
If the doctor issues it at the end of the video call, the code usually arrives by SMS or email immediately or within minutes — not as a promise that the whole booking happens in under an hour.
How much does it cost?
€19 at Lon Clinic for the renewal video consultation. If the doctor decides this is a new problem, they will say so — that may need a full 39 € general consultation instead.
Does travel insurance cover this?
Some policies cover outpatient or telemedicine. Check yours. Lon Clinic can issue a receipt. Many visitors just pay the 19 €.
