Therapy in Lisbon: how the local system works
In Portugal's public health service (SNS), psychology goes through a referral from your family doctor (médico de família). Many foreign residents are still waiting to be assigned one, and public psychology appointments are scarce, so most people pay privately.
A private session in Portugal costs on average around €42, according to the Fixando platform's 2025 figures, with higher prices in Lisbon. If you need to talk to someone today, the SNS 24 line (808 24 24 24, option 4) has psychologists on call around the clock, and has offered the service in English since 2022.

You receive an invoice with your NIF (Portuguese tax number) for every session. Many Portuguese health insurance plans reimburse part of a psychology session; international expat plans sometimes reimburse outpatient therapy against an invoice. Check your policy before you book.

You and your psychologist are in the same time zone. The time you book is the time in Lisbon and Porto.
Is this legal?
Yes. Lon Clinic's psychologists licensed by the Portuguese Board of Psychologists (EU), seeing clients online from Portugal. Under EU Directive 2011/24/EU, telemedicine is provided in the Member State where the provider is established, which for us is Portugal. More on the rules.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have an office in Lisbon?
No. All sessions are online, by video, so you can join from home in Lisbon, Porto or anywhere else in Portugal.
Is the therapist licensed in Portugal?
Yes. Our psychologists are licensed by the Portuguese Board of Psychologists (Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses), and Lon Clinic is registered with the Portuguese health regulator (ERS 45475).
Can I get an invoice with my NIF?
Yes. Every session is invoiced in your name, with your NIF if you give it to us, so you can claim it as a health expense in your IRS tax return.
How soon can I start?
There are usually openings in the same week. The calendar shows live availability before you book.
Does online therapy work as well as in person?
For anxiety, depression, stress and burnout, research shows results similar to in-person therapy, as long as you have a stable connection and a private space.
Can we do couples therapy in English?
Yes, in English or Portuguese. The first couples session is €45, then €75 a session.
