Therapy in Berlin: how the local system works
With public health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung), you first book an initial consultation (Sprechstunde), for example through the 116117 appointment service. The wait for the therapy itself is the hard part: a 2018 study by the German Federal Chamber of Psychotherapists found an average of 19.9 weeks nationally, and 13.4 weeks in Berlin. Most therapy with public insurance is also in German.
Paying privately in Germany usually costs around €100 to €150 for a 50-minute session, based on the official fee scale (GOP). Our guide to finding a therapist in Germany explains all the options.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the wait for therapy in Berlin?
With public insurance, a 2018 national study found an average of 13.4 weeks in Berlin from the first consultation to the start of therapy. With us there is usually an opening in the same week.
Can I see you instead of waiting for a Kassensitz?
Yes. You can start with us now and stay on a public waiting list if you want to. Our sessions are paid privately and are not reimbursed by German public insurance.
Is online therapy from another EU country legal?
Yes. Under EU Directive 2011/24/EU on cross-border healthcare, care given by telemedicine is provided in the Member State where the provider is established. Our psychologists are licensed by the Portuguese Board of Psychologists and see clients online from Portugal, where Lon Clinic is registered with the health regulator (ERS 45475).
Do I need a referral from my GP (Hausarzt)?
No. You book directly.
What if I need medication?
Psychologists do not prescribe. If medication might help, we will explain how to raise it with your doctor in Germany.
Can we do couples therapy in English?
Yes, in English. The first couples session is €45, then €75 a session.
