How do I manage conflict without losing people?
Updated · Lon Clinic
Short answer: no one should leave a conflict feeling they "lost". A fair, transparent process does that: everyone is heard, decisions are explained, and the focus is on the work, not on blame.
Practices that protect retention
- Acknowledge the discomfort instead of minimising it ("I know this has been difficult").
- Don't take sides in public.
- Give each person something they asked for, where possible.
- Redefine responsibilities to remove points of friction.
- Follow up one to one in the weeks after.
- Offer confidential psychological support to whoever was most affected.
For the step-by-step process, see workplace conflict management. For the conversation itself, see how to talk to a burnt-out employee.
