How can I retain my employees?
Updated · Lon Clinic
Short answer: to retain employees, focus on four things: a sustainable workload, supportive managers, a visible path to grow and specific recognition. Pay matters, but people rarely leave for money alone. They leave when they are exhausted, undervalued or see no future.
What works
- Measure burnout anonymously to find teams at risk before resignations.
- Hold "stay interviews": ask those who stay what would make them leave, instead of relying on exit interviews.
- Train managers. The relationship with the line manager weighs heavily in the decision to leave.
- Rebalance workload in teams with the most departures.
- Offer fast, confidential access to a psychologist and doctor.
- Recognise specifically: concrete feedback, flexible hours, autonomy.

Will a pay rise solve it?
It helps in the short term, but not if the cause is exhaustion or poor management.
What is a stay interview?
A conversation with people who are staying about what keeps them and what would make them leave, held before they decide to go.
